The Labour Party in Abia State has successfully concluded its primary elections for the 2027 general elections, producing candidates for governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions across the state’s 184 wards.

The primaries, which were conducted simultaneously across the 17 local government areas and 24 state constituencies on Saturday, were described by the party as peaceful, transparent and free of any disruptions or incidents.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Iroegbu Emenike, the Labour Party said the exercise was conducted in full compliance with the Electoral Act and the party’s guidelines, particularly the provisions relating to consensus and affirmation processes.

Following the completion of the affirmation exercise and collation of results, Governor Alex Otti emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

For the Senate, the party affirmed Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for Abia South, Senator Darlington Nwokocha for Abia Central, and Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex for Abia North Senatorial District.

The party also unveiled its candidates for the House of Representatives, including Amobi Godwin Ogah for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi, Ibe Okwara Osonwa for Arochukwu/Ohafia, Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso for Bende, Obinna Aguocha for Ikwuano/Umuahia, Ginger Onwusibe for Isiala Ngwa North/South, Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh for Aba North/South, Okezie Chiemela Wambu for Osisioma/Ugwunagbo/Obingwa, and Nwoke Adigwe for Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency.

Candidates also emerged for all 24 seats in the Abia State House of Assembly through the affirmation process.

The Labour Party said the successful conduct of the primaries demonstrated that internal democracy could thrive in an atmosphere of unity, consensus and mutual respect.

The party noted that, unlike the disputes and controversies that have trailed primaries in some other political parties, its members embraced a peaceful process that reflected collective agreement and a shared commitment to the party’s objectives.

According to the statement, party members across the state celebrated the outcome of the exercise, which it said showcased the unity and cohesion within the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party called on its members, supporters and stakeholders to remain united as preparations begin for the general elections, expressing confidence in its chances of securing another electoral victory in the state.

It also commended the National Working Committee, State Working Committee, party leaders, aspirants, security agencies, INEC officials, ward executives and members for their roles in ensuring the smooth and successful conduct of the primaries.
