The House of Representatives candidate of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. ThankGod Samuel Uchenna, has donated N1m to tenants affected by a fire incident at Eziukwu Aba Ward 1, Omuma Road, Aba, Abia State.
Uchenna made the donation on Wednesday when he visited the scene of the incident to sympathise with the victims and assess the extent of the damage.
According to a statement by his media team, the NDC candidate was on transit when he received news of the fire but immediately diverted to the area to see the situation firsthand and meet with the affected tenants.
The fire reportedly destroyed properties and caused substantial losses to the victims, although no life was lost in the incident.
Speaking with the affected residents, Uchenna expressed sympathy over the losses, noting that the impact of the fire went beyond damaged buildings and personal belongings.
He said the victims had lost the fruits of years of hard work, livelihoods, memories and means of survival.
The candidate subsequently donated N1m to the affected tenants as immediate relief and urged them not to lose hope despite the setback.
Uchenna said leadership should not be limited to making promises, stressing that leaders must be present and take practical steps to support people during difficult moments.
He added that his visit was driven by the need to stand with the victims and demonstrate what he described as people-centred leadership and responsive representation.
The incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of residents and businesses to fire disasters, particularly in densely populated areas of Aba.
