The Abia State Government has announced a series of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening governance, enhancing security, improving service delivery, and accelerating digital transformation across the state.
Speaking after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the state’s newly established Citizens’ Engagement Centre is ready for commissioning.
According to Kanu, the technology-driven platform is designed to deepen communication between government and citizens by providing a reliable channel for real-time interaction. The centre will receive and process inquiries, complaints, suggestions, and feedback from residents, while ensuring prompt transmission to relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for action.
He explained that beyond citizen engagement, the facility will function as a data collection and processing hub, supporting evidence-based policymaking, programme evaluation, and improved public service delivery.
The government also provided an update on its strategic collaboration with MTN Nigeria, aimed at achieving full voice and data network coverage across Abia State.
Kanu revealed that the first phase of the project is expected to be completed within the next eight to ten weeks, significantly improving digital connectivity and access to critical services.
He noted that the initiative will promote social and financial inclusion, expand access to education and healthcare, and strengthen security by ensuring reliable telecommunications services in both urban and remote communities.
As part of efforts to promote the state’s cultural heritage and creative economy, the government announced that the Canvas, Culture and Arts Festival 2026, themed “Defining Us,” will hold on June 25, 2026, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium.
Organised by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, the festival will feature art exhibitions, cultural performances, networking opportunities, and engagements with established and emerging artists, showcasing the rich cultural identity and creative talents of Abians.
On security and public safety, the state government announced the commencement of comprehensive enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, in designated restricted areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
Kanu said the measure forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to strengthen security and create a safer environment for residents.
Under the new regulations, all motorcycles operating within the state, whether for commercial, private, courier, or delivery services must be registered. The Abia State Harmonised Task Force, working alongside security agencies, has been mandated to ensure compliance.
Operators found violating the ban in restricted areas will face a penalty of ₦50,000, while designated loading bays have been established for impounded motorcycles.
The government further disclosed that the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue will maintain a comprehensive database of registered motorcycles. Approved riders will receive colour-coded reflective jackets based on their senatorial districts and unique local government identification numbers to aid monitoring and identification.
Courier and delivery motorcycles, although permitted to operate upon registration, will be strictly prohibited from carrying passengers and must comply fully with the approved identification framework.
While acknowledging that the policy may create temporary inconveniences for some residents and operators, the government maintained that public safety remains paramount.
Kanu added that alternative transportation arrangements are being considered to cushion the impact of the policy and provide viable mobility options for affected residents.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Otti administration to building a secure, innovative, digitally connected, and people-centred Abia State where governance remains responsive and accessible to all citizens.
