The atmosphere at Obehie Central School, Ukwa West Local Government Area, came alive with excitement and political enthusiasm on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026, as the Onu-Ugu Women for Alex Otti formally inaugurated their Local Government, Ward, and Polling Unit executives in a colourful ceremony that attracted party faithful, government officials, and community leaders from across the area.
The event, described by participants as an “electrified wave” of grassroots mobilization, underscored the growing strength of the women-led political support group and its commitment to consolidating support for Governor Alex Chioma Otti and the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Delivering her welcome address, the Ukwa West Coordinator of the association, Evangelist Mrs. Prisca Ekpo, expressed profound gratitude to the state leadership of the group for their unwavering support and dedication towards ensuring the success of the inauguration.
She commended Governor Alex Chioma Otti for what she described as his transformational leadership and visible developmental strides across Abia State within three years of his administration, stressing that the achievements of the governor had strengthened the confidence of women across the state in the New Abia agenda.
Mrs. Ekpo pledged the group’s unwavering support for Governor Otti’s re-election bid and all Labour Party candidates in Ukwa West, emphasizing that the women remain committed to sustaining the momentum that brought the current administration to power.
She also paid glowing tribute to the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for her motherly guidance, leadership, and support for women across the state.
According to her, the Onu-Ugu Women movement has remained active in Ukwa West for over three years, attracting women from different communities who embraced the vision and objectives of the group from its inception.
Mrs. Ekpo further applauded the partnership between the association and the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) under the leadership of Ven. Joshua Ogadinma Onyeike, noting that the collaboration had empowered numerous women through skills acquisition programmes in baking, decoration, catering, agriculture, and other income-generating ventures, alongside the distribution of farm inputs and cash support.
In her keynote remarks, the State Coordinator of Onu-Ugu Women, Lady Grace Ibe, PhD, lauded Governor Otti and his wife for providing exemplary leadership that has repositioned Abia as an emerging economic hub.
She described the women as strategic partners in the New Abia project and commended members in Ukwa West for their dedication, resilience, and willingness to remain steadfast in supporting the administration’s developmental vision.
Lady Ibe urged the newly inaugurated executives to intensify grassroots mobilization efforts and continue championing the ideals of good governance and people-centred leadership.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area, Pastor Dike Briggs Nwankwo, represented by the Deputy Mayor, Pastor Joel Nwankwo, applauded the women for their organizational strength and commitment to political participation.
Similarly, Arc. Chinedu Enyioko, President of the Asa Development Union (ADU) Youth Wing, encouraged the women to remain focused, reliable, and persistent in advancing the objectives of the association and ensuring electoral victories for Governor Otti and Labour Party candidates across all wards.
The inauguration attracted several notable personalities, including the Deputy State Coordinator of Onu-Ugu Women, Barr. Nkechi Nwulu, State Financial Secretary; Pastor Jemaima Agbo, Coordinator of Ohafia LGA; Mrs. Oluchi Okafor, Coordinator of Osisioma LGA; Deputy Mayor of Ukwa East, Hon. Dr. Thelma Okezie; Financial Secretary of Ikwuorie East Ward, Mrs. Florence Uloma Nnah; Protocol Officer and Diaspora Coordinator, Chief Mrs. O.J. Kanu; Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PDD Construction Services Ltd, Engnr. Uchenna Chigbu, and Labour Party Ward Chairman, Friday Chidi, among others.
A major highlight of the event was the official swearing-in ceremony of the newly inaugurated Local Government, Ward, and Polling Unit executives. The occasion also featured the presentation of gifts to the state executive members in appreciation of their leadership and support.
The inauguration is widely seen as a significant boost to grassroots political mobilization in Ukwa West, further strengthening the organizational structure of the Onu-Ugu Women movement as it continues to champion the vision of the Otti administration across Abia State.
