The Asa Development Union (ADU), the apex sociocultural organization of the Asa people in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has welcomed the outcome of the recently concluded party primaries for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, describing the emergence of three Asa sons as candidates of major political parties as a milestone in the quest for equitable representation.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the union expressed appreciation to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for what it described as their commitment to fairness, equity, and inclusiveness during the nomination process.
According to the ADU, the primaries produced Barr. Samuel Okezie Nwogu as the APC candidate, Chief (Engr.) Adinigwe Ugochukwu Nwoke as the Labour Party flagbearer, and Barr. Chiemena Oforji as the candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress.
The union noted that the development has positioned Asaland to produce the next representative of the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives following the 2027 general election.
ADU recalled that the Asa Think Tank Group, a committee established by the union to advocate for greater inclusion of Asa people in governance, had consistently pointed out that no indigene of Asa had represented the constituency in the House of Representatives over the past 19 years.
It commended the three political parties for considering the concerns during their candidate selection processes, describing the outcome as a positive step toward addressing longstanding issues of political inclusion.
The union also expressed gratitude to the national, state and local leadership of the APC, LP and NDC, their working committees, and party members for supporting what it described as an inclusive democratic process.
ADU further expressed appreciation to the people of Ndoki and all aspirants who participated in the primaries, acknowledging their contributions to a peaceful and competitive exercise.
While expressing optimism ahead of the 2027 elections, the union stated that it was confident that whoever eventually wins the election would provide effective and quality representation for the people of Asa and the entire Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency.
