The political landscape of Ukwa Federal Constituency has entered what many consider a defining moment. Following the conclusion of party nomination processes, the House of Representatives ticket for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, across major political parties including the APC, Labour Party, and NDC, has effectively been micro-zoned to the Ipu Clan of Ukwa West.

For many in Asa land, this is more than a routine political development. It represents the culmination of years of advocacy, negotiations, and persistent demands for equity in the sharing of elective offices within the constituency.

The campaign for political justice did not emerge overnight. The Asa Development Union (ADU), alongside the New Ukwa Progressive Initiative (NUPI), respected stakeholders, community leaders, party faithful, advocacy groups, and numerous youths consistently argued that political representation should reflect the long-established charter of equity that promotes fairness and rotational leadership among the constituent clans of Ukwa Federal Constituency.

For more than two decades, many Asa people believed the area had suffered political marginalization, alleging that power remained concentrated in one section of the constituency at the expense of others. The agitation for a return to equity therefore became a defining political cause across Asa communities.

During those years, disagreements often arose whenever some Asa sons and daughters chose to support candidates from outside Asa, particularly from Ndoki. Such decisions attracted harsh criticism, with some individuals branded as “sell-outs” or even “enemies of Asa.” Those labels reflected the frustration of a people who believed internal divisions were prolonging their exclusion from political representation.

Today, however, the political equation appears to have changed.

With the House of Representatives ticket now firmly returning to Ipu Clan, many observers are asking an important question: Does the description “enemy of Asa” still hold the same meaning?

If an Asa indigene who previously supported a candidate from another zone now chooses to support any candidate from Ipu Clan, irrespective of political party, should such a person still be viewed as working against Asa’s collective interest?

These are legitimate questions deserving thoughtful reflection rather than emotional reactions.

It is also important to acknowledge that the current zoning arrangement was not accidental. It emerged from extensive consultations involving the Asa Development Union and the Asa Think-Tank Committee, whose recommendations sought to ensure fairness in the distribution of elective offices within Ukwa West.

With that objective now substantially achieved, the political contest has naturally shifted. The debate is no longer whether Asa should produce the next representative; it is now about which candidate within the Ipu zone possesses the competence, credibility, experience, and vision to represent the constituency effectively.

As campaigns gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, candidates should be evaluated on their records, leadership qualities, public service, and capacity to deliver meaningful representation. Democratic competition within the same zone should not be mistaken for betrayal of the collective Asa interest.

Indeed, political preferences, personal relationships, party affiliations, and individual convictions will always influence electoral choices in every democracy. Such differences should enrich political discourse rather than create unnecessary divisions among people pursuing the same broader objective.

The larger aspiration of Asa to regain equitable representation in the House of Representatives has largely been realized through the current zoning arrangement. It would therefore appear inconsistent to continue branding fellow Asa sons and daughters as enemies simply because they support different candidates emerging from the same Ipu zone.

Ultimately, regardless of individual political preferences, the expectation is that an Ipu son will represent Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, while another Asa son is expected to emerge to represent Ukwa West in the Abia State House of Assembly after the 2027 elections.

If that is the case, perhaps the time has come for Asa politics to move beyond the rhetoric of “enemies” and “sell-outs” and embrace a new era where competition is based on ideas, competence, integrity, and service.

After years of agitation and the apparent restoration of the charter of equity, one question remains for the people of Ukwa to answer:

Now that political justice appears to have been achieved, do enemies of Asa still exist, or has that chapter of our political history finally come to an end?
