Esther Ogechika Benson Nworgu won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday, lifting 123kg to claim the women’s para powerlifting lightweight title.
Nworgu, who hails from Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, lifted an impressive 123kg to secure the gold medal and hand Team Nigeria its first appearance at the top of the podium at the Games.
Her compatriot, Esther Onyemaechi, won the silver medal to complete a memorable one-two finish for Nigeria, while Olivia Broome of England claimed the bronze medal.
Nicknamed “The Lioness,” Nworgu produced a composed and dominant performance to outlift her rivals, further underlining Nigeria’s pedigree in para powerlifting, a sport in which the country has established itself as one of the world’s leading forces.
