The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher institution located in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State in Northeast Nigeria. The university, which was created by the federal government of Nigeria in 1975, with the intention of its becoming one of the country’s principal higher-education institutions, has the mandate of teaching, research and community service.
Today, the 17th day of July 2025, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to rename the University of Maiduguri after ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
This recommendation and approval were made during an expanded FEC to honour the late President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the school will now be known as the “Muhammadu Buhari University”, Maiduguri, Borno State.
